De meeste schilderijen zijn ontstaan uit zijn behoefte de wereld te duiden en te relativeren, gebaseerd op en gedestileerd uit de werkelijkheid, of hoe die zou kunnen zijn.

In 1999 heeft hij zich eenmaal over zijn schilderijen uitgesproken op schrift, omdat dat nodig was om kunstacademie Minerva te Groningen met succes af te ronden. Lees zijn woorden in Stijn's Wonderlijke Wereld (1999).
Sinds 2007 vormt Stijn Smit samen met Irem Kaneli het kunstenaarsduo Kaneli & Smit (website Kaneli & Smit).

Since 2007, Stijn Smit and Irem Kaneli have formed the artist duo Kaneli & Smit (website Kaneli & Smit).
